A Haifa woman who was shot and killed by police in Haifa, Israel, has been identified as the first woman killed in the country’s war on drugs.
A police source told the Israel Radio news website that the female officer was responding to a call about a man who had been running in a park in the southern part of Haifa.
She was shot in the chest and died at the scene.
The Haifa resident, identified only as Rachael, was the first Haifa police officer to be killed in an incident on Sunday, according to the Haifa Police Department.
Rachael was the 26th Haifa officer killed by the police this year, according the Haaretz daily, citing statistics provided by police.
Haifa has been a frontline city for police in the war on drug and gangs.
On Sunday, the Haight Ashbury neighborhood was engulfed in a major protest against the police shooting, and a police car was burned in an apparent retaliation.
